Science Games

There’s got to be hundreds of them floating around the internet, clinging to whatever ad they can, like little parasites. Most people don’t look twice at them, but those that do, usually enjoy them immensely. What are they? Science games.

There are all sorts of them, like the Internet ones that are set up to send you into virtual space (destroy all the comets in thirty seconds or less for a health bonus!) or back to the realm of roaming dinosaurs (find all the eggs before you get eaten!). Science games are, by definition, scientific but the majority is actually focused at younger children and is used to simply keep them interested so they’ll be keener in the classroom.

Not all science games revolve around the computer either. They could be anything from Bingo to Name That Planet, or anything in between inside of a classroom Any kind of race or competition will go over well with kids of all ages—especially the older ones, who’ll do anything to keep their pencils still for an extra moment.

Any game that includes live animals is bound to be a hit too. Kids will be much more eager to learn about ecosystems and the surrounding subjects if they can see a live version of it—pictures just don’t do justice. The same doesn’t necessarily go for plants (think photosynthesis) in the classroom, but every little bit helps. Whether it’s a form of ‘Pin the Tail on the Donkey’ with a scientific twist (‘Pin the Kidneys on the Human’?) or other, it’ll keep the students interested.

The only no-no when it comes to playing or designing science games, is that getting too scientific will make it seem more of a work exercise than a game—and that won’t sell. The more you play these kind of games, the more you—and anyone else you’re with, whether if be friends or students—will get out of it.
